Montgeaux

Day 5 Visiting one of the smallest regions

Day 5 Visiting one of the smallest regions. To see what we got up to Day 4 click here. We are heading to the smallest Champagne regions. Guess which one? Montgeaux – I have also never heard of it and we are now going to taste champagne from this tiny region near Troye Champagne 🥂🍾

We made the short drive from Sezanne to the outskirts of Troyes and then turned towards Montgeaux, winding up through the vineyards to the village. We have picked two producers to visit. The first experience is not thrilling, Jacques Lassaigne is not welcoming and does not seem to bother about visitors or degustation.

Off to the second choice! On the way there we passed another producer that was open, so we stopped to try our luck. What a bizarre experience that is

The owner Mr. Olivier Lassaigne comes from his house after we ring the bell outside the tasting room. He looks surprised to see tourists. We if we could try his champagne. He brings the smallest flute glasses you can imagine and pours a thimble drop into them. The amount of totally flat liquid evaporates forgettably in the mouth. Another Cuvee is brought from the fridge and the process carries on. All the champagne bottles have proper champagne stoppers and only about 50 ml has been used, probably only over the past few weeks! Michael and I stared at each other in disbelief.

You would have probably left already, wouldn’t you? We do not want to be rude and suffer through this terrible degustation. It is normal that you buy at least one bottle after a tasting but what should we do now?

Michael had the brightest idea to ask about the “Blanc de Blanc” we have not tasted that yet, and hooray Monsieur opens a new bottle!!! …wow the bubbles are really dancing in the 5ml drop but we can at last taste the champagne and can make a purchase 🙈

Today, I realized that the smallest may not be only applied to this wine region.

We will share the photo with you when we open the bottle and trust me, we will drink all of it that night.
